Settled in 1763, Machias townspeople carved their living from the forests surrounding the town and relied on the mighty Machias river. The area was a leader in the lumber and shipbuilding industries, as well as fishing and other trade.

The first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought just off the current site of Fort O'Brien State Park in Machiasport. The Burnham Tavern, the town's gathering place during the Revolution, is now a museum and remains in authentic condition in the heart of Machias. The Gates House Museum in Machiasport proudly preserves the area's bond with it's seafaring past. There are many other historic sites and districts with rich backgrounds which can be explored, including the unique and stately Ruggles House in Columbia Falls, and the fascinating O'Brien Cemetery in Machias.

For beachcombing or swimming, Roque Bluffs State Park boasts both a sandy beach and a fresh water pond. Jasper Beach is a fascinating seawall crescent beach, consisting of an unusual deposit of smooth jasper pebbles. Starboard Cove and Cutler Harbor are picture perfect fishing villages. Numerous inland lakes and rivers provide excellent opportunities for canoeing, fishing and swimming.

A remarkable natural resource, low bush wild blueberries grow on enormous fields called barrens. The land is covered with white blossoms in the spring, blueberries in the summer and brilliant red foliage in autumn. The blueberry harvest is a traditional late summer event, and is highlighted by the popular Machias Blueberry Festival, held the third weekend in August.

The University of Maine at Machias offers workshops, art galleries and many cultural programs.  Other art galleries, theatre groups, restaurants and cafes provide diversion and glimpses of fine local talent.
