If Naples boasts the most golf courses per capita, the Fort Myers, Florida golf courses must surely boast the most private golf courses per capita. Not to worry, though, there are plenty of exceptional Fort Myers, Florida golf courses open to the public.

Among them the Eastwood, rated highly by "Golf Digest" as one of the top public courses in the entire US. There is also the venerable Fort Myers Country Club, one of the oldest, most respected courses in Southwest Florida. For the purposes of this survey of Fort Myers, Florida golf courses, we will profile and list only those courses that are listed as strictly "public".

We begin our survey of the Fort Myers, Florida golf courses at the Eastwood Golf Course. The Eastwood was recently rated by "Golf Digest" as the 32nd best public golf courses in America--and for good reason. The Eastwood boasts broad, well-groomed fairways, a forgiving layout, and, unlike many new courses, it has no homes along the course. Compared to other Fort Myers, Florida golf courses, theEastwood is relatively hilly. Though, we're still talking about Florida here, so to describe something as "hilly", it's a relative description.

The course features a wide array of wildlife such as alligator, wild herons, and wild turkey. But not to worry: the wild turkey generally keep to themselves (just kidding: the alligators generally steer clear of humans, but a modicum of caution is advised).

Next on our survey of Fort Myers, Florida golf courses is the venerable Fort Myers Country Club. Though it's one of the oldest and most respected courses in Southwest Florida, don't let the name fool you: the Fort Myers Country Club is fully open to the public. The course here is flat and the greens trend to the smallish (but well-maintained). The course is generally open, with some trees that you have to work around. Water comes into play on eight of the eighteen holes. The Fort Myers Country Club boasts fine facilities, including a decent pro shop for all of your golfing needs. It also happens to be reasonably priced. Though this is the oldest course
in Southwest Florida, there is nothing "old" about this place: all of the facilities are up to date and well-maintained. For a challenging yet reasonably-priced golfing destination among the Fort Myers, Florida golf courses, the Fort Myers Country Club is a sure bet.

Last on our survey of Fort Myers, Florida golf courses is the Eagle Ridge Golf Club. Eagle Ridge is a typically flat Florida course with a number of water hazards that come into play--seventeen of the eighteen holes. This makes Eagle Ridge slightly more challenging than other Fort Myers, Florida golf courses. Not to worry, though, the fairways are relatively open and well-maintained.
