SOUTH BEACH
Glitzy, glamorous South Beach is undoubtedly the trendiest part of town, and a magnet for those who thrive on its cosmopolitan atmosphere, designer shopping, upbeat restaurants and fast-paced nightlife. South Beach itself, with its white sands, palm trees and dazzling blue sea, is great for surfing, fishing and sunsets. But the most striking feature of South Beach is its famous ART DECO HISTORIC DISTRICT – over 800 buildings within one square mile, all in the same streamlined architectural style, painted in pastel shades and lit with brilliantly coloured neon lights. Tours of the district are offered on Saturday morning or Thursday evening and self-guided tour maps are always available at the Art Deco Welcome Center.

KEY BISCAYNE

The beach is nice if you want water without long marches across hot sand, and a popular clothing-optional section at the north end of the beach lures people who want a total tan.  Other offerings include tennis, volleyball, kite flying, kayaking, charter-fishing excursions, and a par-3, 9-hole golf course. CORAL GABLES
This elegant Spanish and Mediterranean-style residential district was created by developer George Merrick during the boom years of the 1920s. Today, it contains some of the city’s finest architecture, set amidst landscaped plazas and parkways. Some buildings are preserved as historic landmarks, including the stunning Biltmore Hotel. The remarkable Venetian Pool, transformed from a mere rock quarry in 1923, has exotic bridges and waterfalls and reveals the lavish Coral Gables lifestyle of the period. Today, it is the only swimming pool on the National Register of Historic Places. Comprising 83 acres, Fairchild Tropical Garden is the largest tropical botanical garden in the continental United States. Eleven lakes, a rain forest, and lots of palm trees, cycads, and flowers, including orchids, mountain roses, bellflowers, coral trees, and bougainvillea make it a garden for the senses. 

Coral Gables is also known as the home of University of Miami, and for offering fine art galleries, shopping, golf, restaurants and hotels.

This 450-acre bayfront estate adjacent to Biscayne National Park offers tours of the first hotel between Coconut Grove and Key West in the early 1900's, as well as the Mediterranean-style Stone House Charles Deering built in 1922.  Also on the property is a boat basin, a palm grove, nature trails, and a Tequesta Indian burial ground dating from 1500. Vizcaya is a beautiful Italian Renaissance-style palace set in ten acres of formal gardens, south of downtown Miami on Biscayne Bay. Built in 1916 as a winter residence for the Chicago industrialist, James Deering, its 34 rooms contain much of the original furnishings and artwork.  Allow 2 hrs. minimum for this Miami, Florida attraction.  OPEN:  Daily 9:30AM to 5PM; last entry 4:30PM.  COST: $12 adult, $5 children ages 6-12.

Miami MetroZoo, just south of Miami, is a state-of-the-art cageless zoo, with over 700 animals roaming the 290-acre grounds, separated by moats from spectators. Wildlife shows, a petting zoo, tram tours, monorail, gift shops, food courts and a playground provide fun for all the family. Miami-Dade Cultural Center is comprised of three Spanish-style buildings, housing the Miami Art Museum, the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, and the Main Library.  COST:  Combination tickets to the two museums is $6 for adults.

Since 1996, Miami Art Museum has been a showcase of international and Western art, including photographs, paintings, sculpture and other mediums, from 1940 to the present.  OPEN:  Tues - Fri 10AM - 5PM; Sat - Sun Noon -5PM.

COCONUT GROVE
Coconut Grove is one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, settled by artists and intellectuals.  It is now a trendy district with a bustling village atmosphere, full of outdoor push carts, lavishly decorated plazas, theatres, nightclubs, fine restaurants, and shops. The main attraction is CocoWalk, a stylish shopping mall packed with restaurants, bars, shops and a cinema. It is also home to the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

Located in the Art Deco District, this 1927 storage facility is now both a research center and the site of the 80,000-plus-item collection of modern design and "propaganda arts" amassed by Miami native and world traveller Mitchell Wolfson, Jr..
