There are more than 30 great Miami, Florida golf courses to choose from, and several are among the top public links in the country.  In addition to championship courses to challenge the most experienced golfer, Miami offers some of the most affordable golfing options in South Florida.  The two city-owned Miami Beach courses welcome guests, and many hotels have arrangements with private courses that allow guests to play.

A NOTABLE MIAMI, FLORIDA GOLF COURSE IS CRANDON PARK GOLF COURSE.

Crandon Park Golf Course on the barrier island of Key Biscayne is recognized as the top public course in the state and offers unending appeal with its tropical island setting.   Golf Digest describes it as "One of America's Top 75 Upscale Public Access Courses" and Golfweek says it's "among the top 10 municipal golf courses in the state of Florida." In 2001, Golf for Women Magazine placed it within the "100 Top Fairways for Women," and Florida's Best Golf Courses magazine once wrote, "The course is nothing less than magnificent."  

The sculpted fairways of this 250-acre Miami, Florida golf course meander along the sea with coconut palms, red and white mangroves, and seven saltwater lakes abounding. On one side of the island is the Atlantic Ocean, on the other is Biscayne Bay, and a 10-minute drive over the Rickenbacker Causeway connects you to downtown Miami.  The course, which measures 7,180 yards, is part of Crandon Park and a municipal facility run by Miami-Dade County.  

Experiencing the natural splendor of this Miami, Florida golf course is a real treat, but the course itself presents a true test of any golfer’s skill. It’s a challenge from the first hole, a dogleg par-5 that requires a drive over water and mangroves, through the 18th hole, another par-5 with Biscayne Bay on one side of the fairway and a saltwater lake on the other. Your skill will be tested on the fourth hole -- at 638 yards, one of the longest par-5s in Florida -- or the seventh hole, touted as one of the greatest holes in golf, a par-4 that doglegs to the right over water.

Crandon is a well-planned challenge built in 1972 by Robert von Hagge and Bruce Devlin. In 1993, a redesign by von Hagge brought new greens and bunker configurations.  Amenities at this Miami, Florida golf course include digital color G.P.S. systems on every electric golf cart, a fully stocked pro shop, Titlest club entals, locker rooms, a lighted driving range, PGA golf instruction, and The Links Grill.

A unique Miami, Florida golf property is Don Shula's Hotel & Golf Club, located in a 5-square-mile, master planned community located within the confines of the Greater Miami Area, called Miami Lakes.   "Don Shula's," says Barbara Cambia, VP of Sales and Marketing, "is the best-kept secret in Florida. Don Shula led the Miami Dolphins through a perfect, record-setting, 17-0 season in 1972, then crowned the achievement with a 1973 Super Bowl VII win over the Washington Redskins.  In partnership with the prominent Graham family, Shula's namesake hotel, golf club and steakhouse opened in 1992 within the Miami Lakes community and now provide a venue for business travelers and athletes to kick back, play golf, and enjoy a fine meal.

GIven 3.5 stars by Golf Digest Magazine, the 6,982-yard Shula Course is a series of runs and offers two  distinctly different types of terrain. The narrow front nine has a long and stretched feel, with a thick line of mature banyan, cypress, oak, and pine trees forming a high canopy overhead.  The back nine feels more like the Florida Everglades with water defining all the remaining holes exclusive of the 170-yard, par 3, number 17.

Overall, Shula's course is a fun, not too demanding Miami, Florida golfing destination where you're not likely to get frustrated and are likely to be entertained.  Main Street offers shopping, dining and a 17-screen movie theater.  The 44,000 square-foot Athletic Club will keep you busy for days with tennis, basketball, racquetball, and any other kind of fitness routine you desire.

At 7,125 yards, and with an abundance of formidable bunkers, length and finesse are needed to score here.

Great White Course - The 148-acre course, designed by Greg Norman, is primarily landscaped with tightly packed coquina sand and is the only "desert-scape" golf course of its kind in the Southeastern United States. The Great White was rated as the best new golf course of 2000, according to the National Golf Foundation.

Gold Course - Originally designed by Bob Von Hagge and Devlin design team in 1968, the course was redesigned by Raymond Floyd in 1995. The Gold Course follows a traditional Florida layout, with gently contoured greens, strategic bunkering, and water surrounding 16 holes.

Red Course - A Dick Wilson favorite at Doral is the Red Course, which presents many challenges for the accomplished golfer with water in play on 12 holes. This course is often the site of corporate tournaments due to its promise of a fair test of golf at any level of play. Unique to the Red Course are two island greens at the par 36th and 14th holes.

Silver Course - The Silver Course was renovated by Jerry Pate in 1998 to include state-of-the-art greens, tees and irrigation system. Narrow fairways, moguls and uniquely elevated target greens are designed for all levels of championship play. Sixteen holes play to water. The course features a signature 14th hole island green.

Also offered at the Doral "Kingdom of Golf" is the Jim McLean Golf School where this PGA Teacher of the Year helps golfers of all skill levels improve their technique and strategy and lower their scores. Improvement is accelerated through the use of video equipment, swing computers, and a knowledgeable staff.
