Fort Myers Beach, Florida Fishing

Warm Gulf waters, rivers, mangrove habitat and reefs/wrecks allow for year-round abundant Greater Fort Myers, Florida fishing. This is one of the few places on earth where you can fish saltwater and fresh water in a single day, or as conditions dictate.

The Greater Fort Myers area is regaled for its tarpon and grouper, large saltwater game fish found in spring and summer. Other saltwater catches include shark, tuna, amberjack, cobia and much more.

Year-round freshwater fishing yields snapper, redfish and trout (the Backwater Slam.) Delicious snook are a prize inshore catch, and cobia, Spanish mackerel, amberjack and even tarpon will move inland as the waterways become salty.

Offshore fishing the reef/wreck system along the Greater Fort Myers coastline provides opportunities for catching grouper, snapper, amberjack, and shark. Artificial reefs/wrecks include Bayronto, a 400-foot British steamer that lies keel-up in 100 feet of water and whose "crew" now consists of tarpon, barracuda, tropical reef fish and soft corals; Fantastico, a Honduran freighter now in 115 feet of water;

The Pegasus, Lee County's newest artificial reef; and the Edison Reef, one of the largest artificial reefs in Florida, comprised of stacked segments of the old Edison Bridge.

For a great day of backcountry Fort Myers, Florida fishing, start before dawn in Estero Bay. A guide will point out hot spots in the miles of shoreline shrouded by mangrove overhangs where snook and trout are plentiful. Fly and plug fishing are increasingly popular along the backcountry, and even if you're not a precision caster, you're sure to catch a few fish because of the wide-open expanses of the bays.

At lunchtime head north to Pine Island Sound. Here the small mangrove islands disappear and are replaced with flats of turtle grass - a favorite hiding spot of predatory fish like snapper. Like Estero Bay the water doesn't get much deeper than three feet, and you'll probably use a long pole to push the boat through the flats toward better hunting areas.

If you want to take the family along, consider several cruising and sightseeing boats which also offer fishing packages. While your drop your line, the kids can spot dolphins swimming nearby, and restrooms and snack bars add to the pleasant trip.
