Places to Stay in Leicester

Leicester has the usual range of places for the visitor to stay from hostels to 5 star hotels. However, Leicester is not renowned as a tourist centre and so the accommodation provision is mainly from the major chains that can be found anywhere. An advantage of that is, of course, that a Holiday Inn is the same in Leicester, London or Leeds.

Starting at the bottom end of the market is the ‘Walkabout Leicester’ off the Markingford Road. It has Twin rooms, Double rooms and rooms big enough for six or eight people to share. Prices start at £10 per night if you’re sharing a room with seven others. Another hostel is the Leicestershire Backpackers Hostel on Windlip Lane. It is also referred to as ‘Dodgy Dick’s Backpackers’, which will either intrigue you or put you off the place! This is a small - no tiny - five bed ‘dorm’ charging £11 per night. Both hostels have age restrictions, no one below 18 or above their mid-twenties. The nearest recommended Camping and Caravanning site would be Ranksborough Hall, near Oakham in Leicestershire.

The Ramada (Jarvis) Hotel is right in the centre of Leicester and offers the standard of luxury that you’d expect from a hotel located in a grand old Victorian building. The Ramada has 104 rooms, over a week-end a room can be booked for about £80 per night whereas in the week they are £110 to £125 per night. The cost includes free on-site parking, which for a city center hotel is starting to become quite rare. The Ramada Hotel is on Granby Street about half-way between the Railway station and the Town Hall.

On St Nicholas Circle, near the Castle Gardens is the 4 star Holiday Inn in Leicester. The Holiday Inn is very close to the City centre but not quite as central as the Ramada. It also charges £2 per day for its on-site car parking. So, if you’re not traveling by car you can book a double room for as little as £40 per night if your stay is over a week-end and not in one of the main holiday periods. Recently refurbished, the hotel has 188 rooms including two long-stay suites.

Away from the city centre is the Westfield House Hotel on the Enderby Road in Blaby. This modern, stylish and moderately sized hotel located in a leafy suburb of Leicester was recently refurbished and offers a relaxing but chic place to stay during your visit to Leicester. Part of the Corus group of hotels it features a Lifestyle leisure club. With 48 rooms and ample on-site parking, a room can be booked from £41 per night.

All the national chains of hotels are represented in Leicester; Campanile, Days Inn, Jurys Inn, Travel Inn, Holiday Inn Express etc. all with plenty of rooms in the £25 to £40 range. Or, if you’re looking for a city hotel but fancy something different from the usual ‘chain’ hotels you could give The Mitchell Hotel a try. This family run hotel is a truly independent hotel and is located one mile from the city centre on Elmfield Avenue just off the London Road. One of its 14 double rooms can be booked for £45 per night and, if you fancy it, you can book a room with a four-poster bed for just £60 per night. The hotel combines the feeling of Victorian splendour with the facilities and brightness of a modern hotel. All its rooms are furnished and decorated to a very high standard.

If you prefer something a little more homely, bed and breakfast establishments in Leicester that are recommended include the following:

The Abinger Guest House on Hinckley Road, which charges £36 per night for a single or £50 for a double room. However, they will negotiate their rates for anyone making a ‘long-stay’ booking. The South Fork Guest House on Narborough Road offers single rooms at £25 and double rooms at £36 per night and just down the road the Oakleaf Guest house offers singles at £16 and doubles at £36 per night.

Out of town, the Rothley Court Hotel at Rothley has to be recommended. Rothley is just off the A6 near Loughborough and the hotel itself is near the station for the steam railway between Leicester and Loughborough. It has 30 rooms all of which are furnished and equipped to the very highest standards of an ‘English Country Mansion’. You can book a double room from £110 a night or a room with a four-poster bed from £150 per night. Rothley Court is steeped in history, there was a Roman villa on the site, it is mentioned in the Doomsday book and William Wilberforce drafted his ‘treaty for the abolition of slavery’ whilst staying at the court. Also, being once owned by the Knights Templar it retains its own Chapel and the hotel is licensed to perform Civil Weddings.
