Christopher Columbus and his crew were the first Europeans to discover the island of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean on Nov. 19, 1493. They found the island populated by about 60,000 Taínos, peaceful people thriving on their fishing and agricultural skills.

Puerto Rico's Caribbean National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Parks service. "El Yunque", as it is known, is home to many species of birds including the Puerto Rican Parrot, one of the world's rarest birds. The island of Mona, fifty miles off Puerto Rico is also a protected area. The island has a number of unique species such as giant iguanas, Hawksbill and Leatherback sea turtles and numerous sea birds. Mona Island is under the management of the US National Park Service and the Puerto Rican Natural Resources Department.
